- Description: The day a couple of extra inches changed my world.

I was at least two inches taller and felt pleased with myself.

I stood in front of the refrigerator with the doors wide open. I could see the top of shelves I never saw before.

I felt taller, prouder, and more confident.

I thought if I was this tall my whole life, I would have spoken up at every work meeting without ever questioning myself, friends would flock to me without having to make any effort, and I would strut around the beach in my bikini without a care in the world.

Being taller could really change a person, I thought.

In reality I’m a 5’1” tall fully grown adult. Until this morning happened.

I ran at full speed through the doorway, only the door wasn’t fully open.

My left foot hit the door and I jammed my toes. Two doctor appointments and an MRI later, I found out I fractured my foot.

So, there I stood in front of my refrigerator in an orthopedic boot. When I stood on the boot, my other foot didn’t touch the floor. I swear the boot made me at least two inches taller. That was the best part of having to wear the boot for weeks.

It’s funny how something like my boot immediately made me feel like a different person.

Standing tall on my boot made me realize I was tired of people telling me “Oh I thought you were one of the kids!” At 48 years old maybe I should take that as a compliment, but for some reason it made me feel less. Less like an adult and less than the people who told me that.

Confidence is a strange thing. Sometimes we have it and other times it seems to go missing.

It shouldn’t be something someone can make you question or take away from you, whether intentionally or not. But it happens. It’s about knowing who you are and standing firm on that no matter how tall you are.

When the boot comes off, will I lose my mojo and feel insecure about my height again?

That remains to be seen.
