Piles of clean laundry fresh out of the dryer covered the couch. Ear buds, magazines, a belt just delivered from Amazon, and two baseball hats hid the top of the coffee table.

Notebooks, papers, mail and last night’s drinking glasses cluttered the kitchen table. A few garbage bags filled with clothes sat in the corner of the room ready to be donated. A new backpack hung from the kitchen chair awaiting its first adventure.

A 40-pack of Poland Spring water bottles was left on the back counter in the kitchen along with a couple of pairs of sunglasses no one claimed as theirs while a watermelon patiently waited to be eaten.

It looked like I had planted seeds under the hardwood floors and grass was sprouting up from it. Sneakers covered with grass clippings were on the floor next to the sliding doors.

As I looked around, the house reminded me of a scavenger hunt where the searchers had no clue what they were doing.

Summer is coming to an end. It’s the weekend before school starts.

I picked up a pen from the coffee table that was half hidden under a sock and put it in the kitchen drawer. That’s where it belongs.

Funny, this place is a disaster and the first thing I do is choose to save my favorite pen from a sock that wasn’t part of a pair.

Priorities.

I love a clean house, but I don’t care for the cleaning process.

I dust the furniture, wipe down the counters, clean the microwave, make the bathrooms smell nice, vacuum, mop, and return everything to its place. Then in about six days, it all needs to be done again.

I run from room to room and realize I have no time to save anymore pens. I start with the biggest, most noticeable things. I put away the piles of laundry in drawers and hang some in the closets. I vacuum the grass and crumbs from the floor. It’s starting to look better already, I told myself as I looked around. I was tempted to quit, but knew I needed to keep going.

The water bottles went in the fridge in the garage. I sliced open the watermelon, cut some into small pieces and made triangles out of the rest. Into the fridge it went.

That was the juiciest watermelon I’ve ever seen. I wiped down the counters and cabinets then mopped the floors next because watermelon juice is sticky.

The hats went on the rack, the belt on a shelf in the closet, and the bags of clothes in the car for drop off tomorrow.

I put the dishes in the sink and yesterday’s glasses in the dishwasher and hit the heavy load setting. The clunking noise of the dishwasher began.

The papers and notebooks went into the art cabinet. Doesn’t everyone have one of these? That random cabinet filled with markers, sharpies, pens, tape, computer paper, and leftover school supplies that no one ever needs, but are there just in case.

I wiped down the kitchen table and shook the dust out of the placemats. The garbage bag gets tied up and put outside. I put a fresh bag in the kitchen pail.

It’s Saturday afternoon, the sun is shining and I sit on the couch enjoying my clean home. I take the pen out from the drawer and start making a grocery list on a post-it note I found in the cabinet of useless school supplies.
